Italian Idiomatic Expressions: Out of My Feet

I love Italian idiomatic expressions – those sayings you just can’t translate directly but which make the Italian language the colorful and charming language it is.

Today’s saying will be perfect for anyone who’s constantly got kids or animals getting underfoot:

Togliti dai piedi!

This is supposed to be used to say, “Get out of the way!” but the literal translation is actually, “Take yourself out of my feet!” Something tells me that if the kids or animals are actually in your feet and not just around them you’ve got more problems than just translating Italian idioms. But maybe that’s just me.

I’ll keep sharing Italian idiomatic expressions with you periodically; and if you’ve got a favorite saying, let me know!

If you like this one, check out some of the other Italian idiomatic expressions I’ve posted about, too.
